Examples of Fullerton College Library Marketing Measures
Examples of librarian outreach to
promote both the Target and Verizon grant-funded print book collections follow.
Promotion of
grant-purchased books includes, but is not limited to:

Fullerton College and North Orange County Community College District Facebook
and Twitter accounts (discoverable online).

· Target Children’s Collection
o Signage: A sign/banner in the library foyer for KinderCaminata that features the Target logo and a message recognizing our Target partnership.
o Bookmarks: Bookmarks featuring the Target logo and a message acknowledging the generosity of Target. In 2012-2013, and 2013-2014, the grant was promoted via bookmarks handed out to some 6,000 campus visitors for KinderCaminata.
o Additional Promotional Outlet Utilized to Promote Target partnership: National magazine, American Libraries, annually runs stories and photos featuring the library puppetry at KinderCaminata, and noting the sponsorship of Target, "A grant from Target helped to fund event festivities and giveaways." (American Libraries is promoted as the official organ of the American Library Association.)
3) In-House Displays: The library has
dedicated shelves, year-round, that display books selected through the Verizon
grant. These shelves feature a sign recognizing the sponsorship by
Verizon.
4)
In-House
Online Media: The library also features information about the partnership/grant
book collections on the library website, including video promotion.
5)
Library Catalog of Books: Another online source of
information about grant books is the integrated library system. Students can
search for grant collection titles using the keywords “Donated by Target” (or
“Buzzy”, which is a 2016 update) and “Donated by Verizon.”
6)
Recognition in Library Lobby: The library also promotes the
collections via donor-recognition plaques in the Fullerton College Library
lobby.
7)
Professional Development Book: The grants are cited in a
book that the acquisitions librarian authored, Practical Programming: The Best of YA-YAAC, published in 2013 by
the American Library Association, Young Adult Library Services Association
division. Practical Programming was
positively reviewed in School
Library Journal.
8)
Bookplates: The partnership is also promoted on bookplates
featuring the corporate logos and a message sharing the good news of grant
funding.
9)
Official Campus Media: President’s Weekly newsletter.
10)
Face-to-Face Campus Outreach: Librarians market library programs and resources via conversations with faculty,
staff, and administrators, and through involvement in campus events on the quad, such as Family and Senior High School Night.
11)
Library Party: A fĂȘte was hosted in the library to celebrate
receipt of the Verizon $15K grant check. Received an email after the event from
Verizon noting that the lead librarian on this endeavor is considered to be a
“good partner” to the Verizon grants team.
12)
Lab School: Since the
spring of 2012,
library staff, faculty, and administration have worked to collaborate to share
and promote the Target story time collection through library readings at the
Child Development Center (to share the collection of Target grant books with
the child development/lab school children via a story time at the lab school).
Faculty contacted regarding the collection include: Patty Green, Amanda Walzer, Sharon DeLeon, and Tom
Chiaromonte.
13)
In-Person Promotion to
Students during Library Instruction Sessions in Room 827: Librarians promote the collections to classes that visit the library for library
instruction sessions, especially ESL and lower-level reading and English
classes (e.g., Darnell Kemp’s Read 36), teaching the students how to search
for the hi/lo books in the Fullerton College Library catalog. (Type
“Donated by Verizon” [or "Buzzy", which is a 2016 update]) into the library
catalog keyword search box to see the variety of books retrieved, including:
monologues, gang life tales, gamer books, ESL guides, poetry books, beauty
guides, YA novels, hot topics books, graphic novels, feature film- and TV
series-related titles, style guides [for writing], both the For Dummies &
the For Complete Idiots series, and much more! Or type “Donated by Target” into the library online catalog
of books to locate grant collection titles.)
14)
In-Person Promotion to
Students during Offsite Campus Classroom LISs: The acquisitions and circulation librarians brought fun reads
to Deidre Hughes’ offsite classes.
15)
In-Person Promotion at Faculty Senate: Library books,
including grant books, promoted at faculty senate meeting by acquisitions
librarian (booktalking).
16)
Library Tours: During library tours, librarians, as
appropriate, point out the fun reads/children’s collection displays.
17)
Via Faculty Survey: The
library promoted grants in a collection development survey sent to all faculty
via SurveyMonkey.
18)
News Releases: The acquisitions librarian promotes the collections via press releases, each individual release is uniquely composed for each media outlet.
Promotion: Retraining Veterans for Civilian Careers
Throughout academic year 2015 – 2016, the acquisitions librarian and
the VRC have collaborated to provide and promote individual and group research
consultation/library instruction session opportunities for student veterans,
including library instruction in the library classroom, at the VRC, and
one-on-one in the research computer section of the library. (Promotional flyer
follows.) During the spring of 2016, the acquisitions librarian staffed a booth
at the Second Annual Veteran’s Career and Resource Fair to promote library
research one-on-one consultations and the transferable credit library course
to veterans. The new resources that are available to veterans at the library
through the student equity grant funding were also marketed to veterans at the Annual Veteran’s Career and Resource Fair, via a handout that listed the newly acquired books and eBooks.
